Holiday at Home

Holiday at Home

Are you one of those people who gets excited at the thought of going on holiday, whether it’s to a new place or back to an old favourite? Well there was excitement at church for those who attended the fifth Holiday at Home, whether they were a newcomer or a regular.

Holiday at Home takes place during a week in August. It is a time when the church seeks to give the older folk of the town a few days of good food, activities and entertainment so that they feel they have had a holiday while remaining at home. No charge is made (apart from the outing) but donations are welcome.

So what did we do on our holiday?

We had a visit from Phil Simpson formerly of BBC Radio Hereford and Worcester, who kept us entertained, informed and educated about the workings of local radio.

We learned about birds of prey from Nikki Cockayne who brought several birds with her. Some of us were brave enough to hold them!

Dr David Webster ‘transported’ us to Oberammergau to learn about and watch the Passion Play.

Other activities included a craft afternoon using silk fibre, games, a quiz, a concert of singing and music and, on the final day, a visit to Croft Castle. Food plays an important part of the week, including the much-enjoyed ‘sweet trolley’ and cream tea.

The whole week may be summed up by one lady who wrote:
“It’s been a wonderful week for myself and many others who, like me, are so grateful for being so well looked after. The programme of events was varied and interesting and the food, as always, delicious. Thank you very much to you all concerned who have worked so hard for our pleasure.”

Special thanks were given to Barbara Clare at the end of the week as this was her last year of organizing Holiday at Home. However it is an occasion when nearly everyone in the church gets involved one way or another and so we look forward to another Holiday at Home next year under the leadership of Mary Sim. We hope we can keep up the high standard set by Barbara and that everyone has come to expect!

We look forward to the reunion in the early part of 2012.
