The theme of last year's Flower Festival, which was held during the weekend of Upton's annual Jazz Festival - Friday 24th to Sunday 26th June - was the 400th Anniversary of the King James Bible.
Tea, coffee, cake and lunches were available.
We're just about to start planning for our 2012 Flower Festival.
A variety of Christian themes have been used for Flower Festivals, with the church being full of beautiful flower arrangements used to illustrate the themes.
2008 - Hope '08 - National initiative to convey the basic Gospel message of hope.
2009 - Missions around the World - showing our interest in those who give up the comforts of home to fulfil the last words of Jesus Christ whe He said, "Go into all the world and make disciples of all men…".
2010 - Jesus, this is your Life - Our theme concentrated on the major incidents in the life and teaching of Jesus Christ as witnessed by those who were with Him at the time. Church members and friends displayed flowers and artefacts to focus attention on specific Bible texts which were placed nearby.
Flower Festival History
The original Flower Festival was the brainchild of Joy Hardy, who was a local district Nurse. Though living in the nearby village of Longdon she was a staunch member of Upton Baptist Church (UBC).
It's thought that the first Flower Festival at UBC was held in the 1980's and was arranged to coincide with the Upton Carnival held annually on a Saturday during the summer. The Church was opened on the Saturday for visitors to view the flower arrangements, and light refreshments were served. Special services were held on the Sunday with the sermon highlighting the theme of the Festival.
With the demise of the Carnival, the date of the Flower Festival was changed to that of the Jazz Festival, starting about 20 years ago. The Jazz Festival attracted many more visitors and musicians and the Flower Festival began to open for longer periods, and to provide more substantial refreshments, much appreciated by the many regular visitors to the Festival.
